Ingredients
- Cake:
- 2 C flour
- 2/3 C cocoa powder
- 1 1/4 t baking soda
- 1/4 t salt
- 2/3 C butter
- 1 2/3 C sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 t vanilla
- 1 1/2 C milk
- Chocolate cream
- 2 C heavy whipping cream
- 1 1/3 C (8 oz) semisweet chocolate chips

Step 1
1. Preheat oven for 350 deg. Grease 3 8 in layer pans. Line bottoms with waxed paper, grease and flour bottom and sides of pans.
2. Mix flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
3. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beat til smooth. Add vanilla. Gradually beat in flour mixture alternately with milk til blended. Mixture will look slightly curdled. Pour about 2 C into each prepared pan.
4. Stagger pans on oven rakes and bake 30 minutes. Switch pan position once to ensure even layers. Toothpick comes out clean. cool on racks 10 minutes. Invert onto racks, remove pans and peel off waxed paper. Turn cakes right side up to finish cooling.
5. Prepare whipped chocolate cream. Heat heavy cream over med. heat til boiling. Add chocolate chips, remove from heat and stir til melted and smooth. Transfer to mixer bowl and refrigerate 2 hours, stirring twice, just til chilled. Beat mixture til soft peaks form. Cream will contiue to thicken after a few minutes at room temp. Do not overbeat. If overbeaten will turn grainy and curdy. If so, reheat, rechill, and rebeat.
6. Assemble the cake, trim off cake excess to make layers flat. Spread 1 C chocolate cream over each layer to build cake. Refrigerate until serving. Top with berries to garnish cake.
