Ingredients

  • Syrup
  • 2 c. firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 c. water
  • 1 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Cake
  • 2 c. flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 melted solid vegetable shortening or butter (there's a choice?)
  • 1 c. milk
  • Whipped cream

Preparation

Step 1

For syrup:
Lightly grease 9x13" baking pan. combine all ingredients in heavy medium saucepan over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil and cook until slightly thickened, stirring constantly, about 4 minutes. Pour into pan.

For cake
Preheat oven to 350. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in large bowl. Blend sugar and butter (or shortening) in another bowl. Add sugar mixture to dry ingredients alternately with milk, stirring to form sticky, thick batter. Using soup spoon, drop batter atop syrup in pan; Batter will expand during cooking. Bake until golden brown and tester inserted in center of batter comes out clean, 30-40 minutes. Serve immediately with cream
