Preparation

Step 1

Heat the apple cider in a small saucepan until it reduces to ¼ cup. Allow it to cool. It will take around 8-10 mins.

Beat sugar with vegetable shortening, in a large bowl and add eggs, cooked cider, and buttermilk.

In another bowl, mix baking powder, nutmeg, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and flour.

Mix both the mixtures; the dry and the wet. Stir to combine them.
Keep adding flour till you get a soft non-sticky dough.

Once you get the right consistency, leave the dough alone for 5 mins.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and roll it out up to ¾ inches thick.

Use a donut cutter; or if you do not have one, use the top of an empty can (wash properly before using) or a biscuit cutter, to cut donuts. Re-roll the scrapes and continue until the dough gets over.

Place all the donuts on a baking sheet and refrigerate for about 20 mins.

Heat a good amount of vegetable shortening in a 3" deep frying pan at 350 - 375° F.

Deep fry the donuts in batches for 4 mins until brown, turning once or twice.

Place them on paper towels to drain off excess oil.

Put cinnamon powder and sugar in a plate and mix. Roll the cooled donuts in this mixture to coat.
