Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1/2 cup of shortening or margarine
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. of nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. of baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups tart apples, sliced
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Topping:
  • 1 cup of brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 stick of butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

1. Cream together shortening or margarine, sugar and eggs.
2. In a separate bowl, sift together dry cake ingredients. Gradually add to creamed mixture along with apples and nuts. Pour batter into a greased 13x9x2" pan and bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
3. Frosting. Combine all frosting ingredients in a saucepan. Cook slowly until thickened. Spread on hot or cold cake.
