Ingredients
- 1/2 cup soft shortening (half butter)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg yolk (save egg whites)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup chopped nuts

Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Mix together shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, and salt; stir into other mixture. Roll into 1-inch balls. Dip into slightly beaten egg whites. Roll into finely chopped nuts. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 1-inch apart. Bake about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer. Cool completely. Place jelly in the thumbprint
