Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • 8 ounces uncooked Italian turkey sausage
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed
  • 2 cups packaged sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1 4 ounce can pitted sliced black olives, drained
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 1 15 ounce can pizza sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 ounces Italian bread cut into 1/2-inch cubes toasted
  • ¾ cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese or shredded reduced-fat Italian blend cheeses (3 ounces)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese and/or dried oregano crushed and/or crushed red pepper

Preparation

Step 1

Coat a large skillet with cooking spray; heat skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, turkey sausage, oregano, and fennel seeds. Cook until meat is browned. Add the mushrooms, black olives, and onion. Cook 5 to 7 minutes more or until vegetables are tender. Stir in pizza sauce, water, and salt. Reduce heat to medium.

Step 2

Top meat mixture with bread cubes and sprinkle with cheese. Cook, covered, about 3 minutes more or until cheese is melted. If desired, top with grated Parmesan, additional oregano, and/or crushed red pepper.

To toast bread cubes, preheat oven to 350°F. Spread bread cubes in an even layer in a shallow baking pan. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden and crisp, stirring twice. Let cool.
