  • 1 Cup Crisco
  • 2 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 3 Medium Eggs
  • 3-1 oz Bottle Red Food Coloring
  • 3 1/4 Cup Plain Flour
  • 2 Heaping Tbsp Cocoa
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Vinegar

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour 2-9 inch cake pans. Cream the crisco and sugar until fluffy. Continue to mix slowly and add 1 egg at a time. Whip until light and fluffy. In a separate bowl, make paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add paste to creamed mixture and whip until light and fluffy. Sift flour and salt together. Alternating, add flour mixture and buttermilk and vanila. Whip until light and fluffy. Fill pans 2/3 of the way full and bake for 30-40 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans, cool completely, and add icing.
