Basic French Toast

A standard recipe I turned too often while in college. Easier than pancakes or waffles and great for leftovers.

Ingredients

  • 6 pieces whole wheat bread
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • dash salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla or maple extract
  • Toppings: Pure maple syrup, fresh fruit, fruit puree or warmed preserves drizzled on top. Apple sauce or apple butter, yogurt, cinnamon/sugar, sauteed bananas or other fresh fruits.
  • Other variations: Try OJ in place of milk, substitute pumpkin pie spice for cinnamon, use flavored bread slices such as cranberry walnut, cinnamon or even a healthy banana bread recipe!

Preparation

Step 1

In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, salt sugar and extract. Dip bead slices in mixture. Turk to soak well. (Be sure they absorb some but don't let sit too long or will become soggy and hard to remove from mixture).

Lightly oil a heated skillet. Place soaked bread slices into skillet and cook over medium heat until browned. Turn and cook other side.
