Ingredients

  • 1 lb (500g) beef sirloin grilling steak
  • 4 green onions
  • 2 tsp (10mL) vegetable oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Pinch each pepper and hot pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup (50mL) soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup (50mL) dry sherry or beef stock
  • 4 tsp (20mL) granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp (15mL) toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp (15mL) cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp (15mL) water

Preparation

Step 1

Trim fat and slice steak across the grain into strips about 2 inches (5 cm) long and 1/8 inch (3 mm) wide. Cut green onions diagonally into 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces.

In wok or large skillet, heat oil over high heat just until starting to smoke. Stir-fry steak, garlic, pepper and hot pepper flakes for 2 minutes or until steak is still slightly pink. Add green onions, soy sauce, sherry, sugar and sesame seeds; bring to boil. Push meat mixture to side of wok. Blend cornstarch into water, add to liquid in center of wok and cook, stirring until thickened. Return meat mixture to sauce, toss to glaze.
