Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 Tsp. Salt
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. Baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. Ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg (may subst.
- 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg for cloves and allspice)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 -1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 16 oz applesauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup raisins (optional)
- 1 cup dates (optional)
- Caramel Frosting
- 1/2 cup margarine softened
- 1 cup cream
- 3 cups brown sugar

Preparation
Step 1
Into mixer bowl sift flour, sugar, salt soda, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, allspice. Then add applesauce, shortening, water and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes. Add eggs beat 2 more minutes. Stir in raisins, dates and nuts. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9x5x3 loaf pans or bundt pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes.
Caramel Frosting
Combine ingredients into saucepan and cook until a soft ball stage about 236 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat and beat until mixture thickens and cools somewhat and spread on applesauce cake.
