Preparation

Step 1

Mix dry ingredients and shortening together. Rub mixture with fingers until coarse crumbs form. Push to one side of a big bowl and add water. Mix in a circular motion with your fingers, then knead in a upward motion, stretching it upward with one hand. This should make a stiff dough.

Frybread:

Knead on a floured board for 2-3 minutes. Divide into 6 portions and shape into balls. Flatten dough with your fingers from the center outward until it's 6-7" around. Pat it back and forth with hands like tortillas. Thin out edges so it's all the same thickness. Fry in hot oil until edges brown. Turn over and continue frying until brown.

Tortillas:

Use same recipe, but make them thin, Fry on medium hot griddle with oil.
