Janet discovered this recipe in a cookbook she purchased through her 7th grade home economics class. The bars are good fresh, but get stale very quickly.

Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. nuts
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbs. hot water
  • 2 eggs (slightly beaten)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. chocolate chips

Step 1

Sift the flour, baking powder, soda and salt together. Add the nuts and mix well. Cream the shortening, sugar and water together. Add the egg and vanilla to the creamed mixture and blend. Add the flour mixture, a small amount at a time. Put the mixture in a greased 9 x 13" pan. Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top. Bake in a 350° oven for 20-25 minutes being careful not to over bake the cookies. After the cookies cool, cut into bars.
