Core the unpeeled apples, then cut into circles or slices. Cook in the butter, turning often, until soft. If you have a sweet tooth or if the apples are bland in flavor, stir in 1/3 cup brown sugar (add slowly so as to not make to sweet) and 2 tablespoons apple cider. Continue cooking until apples are coated with syrup.
