Ingredients

  • French Silk Frosting:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour (if using self-rising omit baking powder and salt)
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 3-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shorting (or soft margarine or butter)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 2-2/3 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine softened
  • 2 ounces melted unsweetened chocolate (cooled)
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour oblong pans, 13x9" or 2 round layer cake pans. Beat all ingredients in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat 3 minutes on high speed scraping bowl frequently. Pour into pans. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, oblong 40-45 minutes, layer 30-35 minutes. Cool. Frost with french silk frosting.

French Silk Frosting:

Beat sugar, margarine, chocolate and vanilla in small mixer bowl on low speed. Add milk gradually, beat until smooth and fluffy. One bar (4 ounces) sweet cooking chocolate melted, and cooled, can be substituted for unsweetened chocolate.
