Preparation

Step 1

Heat the 1 lb. of shortening slowly in a small deep kettle to 350° F. (A cube of bread browns in 60 seconds at 350°.) Beat egg. Add milk and vanilla. Beat together. Add sifted dry ingredients. Mix to blend thoroughly, but do not beat. Stir in 1 Tbs. cooled, melted shortening. Dip teaspoon into the hot shortening, then dip up a spoonful of batter. Quickly immerse spoon into hot shortening and drop off the batter. Turn balls when they come to the surface. Fry for 3 - 5 minutes, or until delicately brown. Do not crowd the kettle. Drain well over kettle, then place on an absorbent paper.
Coat with glaze made of confectioners' sugar thinned with a little milk.
