Preparation
Step 1
A muffuletta is a sandwich indigenous to New Orleans and made, according to Central Market co-owner Larry Tusa, like this:
Slice in half and core an 8-ounce round loaf of Italian bread. Seal the bottom of the bread with a layer of importer Genoa salami; add mortadella and Swiss cheese, then ham and another layer of salami. Top it off with several generous tablespoons of olive salad and brush the inside of the to of the bread with the oil mixture from the jar.
If provolone is used, use a smaller portion that of the other ingredients as it tends to overwhelm the rest. Put the provolone after the layer of ham.
Lettuce, tomato, onion? “Nope, none of that,” Tuso says.
Serve cold.
