Ingredients

  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1/ tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. boiling water
  • Mix the above together and let cool.
  • 2 cakes yeast
  • 2/3 c. cold water
  • Place yeast in the water and let stand 5 minutes. Stir.
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 4 c. unsifted flour

Step 1

Add the yeast mixture and the beaten eggs to the shortening and sugar mixture that is cooked. Add the flour slowly while mixing. Let the dough rise until doubled in bulk. Makes rolls by taking a small piece of dough in hand and make a rope about 3" long and 1" in diameter. Roll first in melted butter or margarine and then in a combination of sugar and grated orange rind. Tie the rope in a knot. Place each roll in a muffin tin and let rise until double in bulk. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes. Use at once or store for 3 - 4 days.
