Ingredients

  • 1 meaty ham bone or 1 large ham hock
  • 7 cups water
  • 1-3/4 cups dried lentils
  • 2 cups sliced carrots, about 3-4 medium carrots
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar (or, replace 1 cup of water with some of the juice from the ham, if the ham was cooked with a sweet glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp bay leaves

Preparation

Step 1

In a stock pot or large kettle, combine all ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, or until lentils are tender.

When finished cooking, take out ham bone or hock and add meat back into soup.
