Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening (Crisco is fine)
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 sq. unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (you can buy a can of powdered, so you'll have it FOREVER)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar until light & fluffy. Add melted chocolate and eggs and beat well. Sift together flour, baking soda & salt (this was done in the 50's - no one sifts anymore). Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Pour into greased 8x8" pan. Cover with foil nd bake at 350 for 1 hour. Serve warm
