Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 large apples, peeled and sliced thinly into 1/4" slices
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 10 slices day-old French bread (3/4 inch thick)
  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 quart milk (or half & half)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Preparation

Step 1

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet and add apples.

2. Cook and stir for 5 minutes.

3. Add brown sugar, water, nutmeg and cinnamon, and continue to cook and stir for 10 minutes until apples are tender.

4. Add bread slices into a greased 13"x9" baking dish.

5. Spoon apple mixture over bread slices, and mix thoroughly with the bread slices.

6. Beat eggs until foamy, then beat in milk (or half & half) and vanilla.

7. Pour egg mixture over the bread and apple mixture.

8. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hrs, or overnight.

9. After refrigerating, remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it stand for 30 minutes.

10. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, and bake uncovered for 35 minutes, or until bread is golden brown and firm.

11. Let sit 10 minutes before serving.
