Preparation
Step 1
1. Preheat oven to 375 / use a 10” by 15” baking pan, lined with parchment paper, be sure to lightly grease the paper
2. Brown hamburger – drain ; add salt & pepper to taste and set aside.
3. Put roll mix and yeast (yeast came in the box) in large bowl add warm water and mix until dough forms ; put dough on floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. Set the dough on the pan (lined with paper) and cover with a towel. Let rest for 5 minutes.
4. Brown onion and garlic in skillet in 2 tablespoons of the olive oil for a few minutes then add the hamburger.
5. Spread dough out evenly on the papered pan and cut lengthwise in half. Cover both halves with the hamburger mixture / top with 5 slices (each half) of American cheese.
6. Roll the short ends up about an inch and then roll lengthwise to form loaf. (The rolling lengthwise part proves to be a little tricky for me – so I just roll as best I can and then put another nonstick pan on top of the loaves and flip them over) Either way – be sure to remove the parchment paper (yes, you can guess – I did not the first time I made these, that is until smoke began rolling out of the oven, Julia Child I am not). Brush remaining olive oil over the tops of the loaves and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for about 7-10 minutes before cutting.
My son loves these dipped in BBQ sauce.
