Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
- 2 cups molasses(preferably sorghum molasses)
- 2 large eggs
- 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar, for rolling the dough

Step 1
1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the shortening, brown sugar, molasses and
eggs. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda,
ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Add the dry mixture alternately with the
molasses mixture and the buttermilk. Stir until well blended. Wrap the
dough and chill for 1 hour.
2. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Grease one more cookie sheets.
3. Remove dough from the refrigerator and shape into walnut-size balls.
roll them in the sugar and place them about 2 inches apart on the
greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until set. Transfer to a
wire rack to cool.
