Ingredients

  • 1 box German Chocolate cake mix
  • 1 14 oz bag of caramels, unwrapped
  • ½ c evaporated milk
  • ¾ c butter or margarine
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/3 c oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 ¼ c water
  • 1 c walnuts, coarsely chopped

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 pan and set aside.

In a medium saucepan combine the caramels with the milk and butter, heat over low heat, stirring often, until smooth. Remove from heat.

With an electric mixer, prepare the cake mix according to package instructions, using the amount of oil, eggs and water specified above. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading evenly.

Bake for 15 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes.

Slowly pour caramel mixture over cake. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and walnuts. Pour remaining batter over all and carefully spread to edges of pan. Bake on middle oven rack for 30 minutes.

Cool and frost with Cocoa Frosting.

Cocoa Frosting

1 16 oz box of confectioner’s sugar
½ c butter or margarine, room temperature
½ c evaporated milk (or less)
1/3 c cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine sugar and cocoa in small bowl. Using electric mixer, begin stirring butter on low speed; gradually add cocoa mixture. Increase speed, beating until well-combined. Reduce speed; add vanilla then begin to add evaporated milk a little at a time. Increase speed and beat until desired consistency. Frosts a 9x13 cake.
