Ingredients

  • ½ cup shortening

  • 1½ cup sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 oz. red food coloring

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 2 tsp cocoa

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 2¼ cups cake flour

  • 1 tsp soda

  • 1 Tblsp vinegar

  • 1 tsp baking powder

Directions

Combine vinegar and soda and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Make paste with coloring and cocoa and add to mix. Add buttermilk alternately with flour, salt, and vanilla. Add soda and vinegar. Do not beat hard, just blend. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees in two 9" layer pans. Cool. Cut into 4 layers and frost (see recipe for $200 Frosting).
