Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter ,room temperature
  • 12 (3/4 inch thick) slices of sturdy bread such as French or challah
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbps. maple syrup, plus more for serving
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • powdered sugar for serving

Preparation

Step 1

Spread butter in bottom of a jelly roll pan.

Arrange bread slices in the pan.

Whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, maple syrup, vanilla and spices.

Pour mixture over bread. Turn bread slices to coat.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Heat oven to 400. Remove plastic wrap, place pan in oven and bake for 25minutes, turn bread over and continue baking unti just golden, about 5 minutes more.

Serve with powdered sugar and maple syrup
