Preparation
Step 1
Mash salmon, bones and all, in a bowl with a fork. Add onion, egg, salt, pepper and dill (if used). Blend well. Crush soda crackers and add to the salmon, mixing well. Add just enough crumbs to make a mixture that will hold its shape.
Make patties and dip each in flour or more cracker crumbs to coat both sides. Heat oil in a heavy skillet. Add patties and fry slowly until golden on both sides. Drain excess oil on paper towel and serve.

I used Carr's table crackers instead of the soda crackers but didn't have enough of them for two cans worth of salmon so I added flour into the salmon mix. I also added a little worcestershire sauce, finely minced onions and celery. I dredged in breadcrumbs, let chill for an hour so that the cakes would hold well. I first baked at 375F for 15 minutes and then browned the sides in hot olive oil for a better presentation.
Thanks for sharing. I used fresh salmon instead of can. Pan fried it and added some salt and pepper to it. I also added garlic, green pepper and green onion. Instead of frying I bake them in an oven at 375 for 15 minutes. Tasty.
Absolutely delicious! I did them just as the recipe stated. I made a dilled mayonnaise to go with it, just a bit of mayo, coarse brown mustard, sugar, and dill. Thank you so much for this terrific recipe--it will be a favorite for many meals to come!
Just what I was looking for! I grew up eating these and wanted something similar, but with a kick. The dill the kick I needed. I used a dill mix that also contained garlic and a few other spices. I also found out what was missing from my old recipe -- the dipping in flour. I have finally figured out why mine were never as good as grandma's! My girls loved them (I told them they were patties and left out the salmon part!) Thanks for a wonderfully quick lunch!
Excellent recipe! I used canned pink salmon (well drained), one egg, pepper, garlic and onion powder, parsley, and cilantro. Instead of soda crackers (because we do low carb/no grains) we used almond meal to coat the exterior of each cake. The cakes were fried up in peanut oil and the came out moist with a crunchy texture. Topped with sriracha, these were tasty bites. Can't wait to have the last one on the side of my salad tomorrow.
I agree -- for a simple, easy, stick-to-the-basics recipe for Salmon Cakes, this is the one to use. The only thing I would change is to make sure I had lemon juice on hand next time; I think a squeeze of citrus over the top would have been a perfect addition. My husband doesn't even like salmon but he ate half of them and mentioned several times how good he thought it was!
This is the first salmon cake recipe we have ever tried. We really enjoy it. My kids like to put ketchup on them. We quadruple the recipe to feed all 10 of us.
DE-licious! I remember when I was a kid my grandma use to make these but I could never get my salmon cakes to taste like hers. I made this recipe last night and they were spot on! She also use to dip them in flour before frying which I had completely forgotten about. Thanks so much for posting!
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. I searched through over 100 recipes to get this one. It's the right combination of simplicity and old-school comfort food that makes a wonderful meal on a cold winter night. Thanks for the recipe!
These were great. My kids loved them (including the one who doesn't eat salmon).
This was my first attempt at salmon cakes. They were great! They held together well. My kids ate them. My 6 year old ate them after telling her they were crabby patties.
These are just lovely little cakes. Fast and easy to put together. I made 2 batches... one for us and the other for the neighbours. My family yummed through them!!! I made as directed...but omitted the salt. This will definately be made again. Thank you for sharing.
Super Fast and Easy. I did not feel like grating an onion so i used onion powers, I did not have soda crackers so I subsituted it for italian bread crumbs. till came out yummy and my family gave it a thumbs up. Thanks bunsby for a great recipe.
Very quick and very easy. I tripled this recipe, and added extra onions and Old Bay Seasoning. I was a bit concerned at first about leaving the bones in, but turns out that you don't even notice them in the finished product. Great recipe. A definite keeper, and thanks so much for posting it!
Just like my mother use to make!
Doubled the recipe, told my kids they were "crabbie patties" (from sponge bob - they are almost 3 and almost 4). Everyone ate them, my husband told me he had to stop himself from eating too many! I am looking for a way to add more fish to our diet and this really seems to fit the bill. Tasted great and easy to prepare!
This recipe was very yummy. I had to add extra soda crackers to get the cakes to hold their shape but it was no big deal. I also made a sauce to go with it of 1/2 cup mayo/salad dressing and 1 teaspoon of dried dill. Great dinner with rice or a salad, thanks!!!
Made tonight. Pretty good, easy but needs more spice inside the patties.

Made this with saltine crumbs, and dredged in flour. Doubled the recipe and made 10 patties. I used an ice cream scoop, then flattened, to get uniform patties. The guys loved the texture alongside a creamy rice. Served with tartar sauce, but would have been great with lemon if I'd had some. Next time I won't overmix, b/c I like it chunky.
This is fantastic, I made it with trout cause that is what we can here, it was very good will make it again. I gave the recipe to my in-laws they love it too, will recommened it others.
Growing uspthese were on regular rotation at our house. These were made using red Alaskan salmon and in place of the soda crackers, a whole grain cracker was used. I got 3 nice patties out of a 7 3/4 oz can. Very good and something I will make again.
Yum!
I'm giving this recipe 5 stars because as a basic salmon cakes recipe I don't think it can be improved. Simple, fast and yummy. I made these as is, with the exception of using finely chopped green onions instead of grated white and bread crumbs instead of cracker. I served the (4) cakes on toast with pickled jalapeños and mustard, roasted red potatoes and a green salad on the side. My husband commented that they taste better than the expensive stuff at restaurants. I'll take it! :)
These were great! I didn't have any crackers on hand so I used bread crumbs, and I used a bit of pickle relish for the dill. Were perfect with a little tartar sauce on a bun. Definately will make these again!
I made this for Good Friday dinner of 2005. Very good and very easy. I did substitue five club crackers for the soda crackers. I also had a pkg. of creamy dill sauce to pour over the top. Very good!!!!
Excellent! Easy and delicious. The flour made quite a difference!
I made this recipe two nights ago, had all the ingredients except for the dill. We all liked it and will make it again, maybe next time I'll try it with dill. Thank you for posting.
Delicious! I used leftover BBQ'd salmon fillet, followed the rest of the instructions and served on whole wheat buns, topped with lettuce leaves & a little tartar sauce as "salmon burgers". I had a little difficulty holding the mixture together but I'm sure it will be easier with a little fish oil from tinned salmon. Thanx Bunsby - and thanx to your mother too!
