Preparation

Step 1

Prepare your favorite brownie mix according to package directions, cool completely, and cut into 1 inch squares. I use an 11×7 dish so that I can get enough squared for 2 layers of brownie in the trifle.

My favorite brownie mix by far is Betty Crocker’s Triple Chunk chocolate. I stopped looking for brownie mix after I made it for the first time, and brownies, as all of my girlfriends know, is my favorite dessert. From scratch or from a box, it’s the best. I love all of the debates between brownies from a box or from scratch – brownies from a box are just pre-measured ingredients. And the Triple Chunk mix has chocolate chunks, in addition to the cocoa mix, that makes for a super moist fudgy brownie.
Shave chocolate onto top layer for garnish. Check out Lauren’s tips for easy chocolate curls. Refrigerate 8 hours before serving.

In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, water and sweetened condensed milk. Mix until smooth, then fold in 8 ounces whipped topping until no streaks remain.
In a trifle bowl or glass serving dish, place half of the brownies, half of the pudding mixture and one 8 ounce container of whipped topping. I’d work around the perimeter first with the brownies, rather than the center, in case you run out. Try to connect the edges of each brownie against the glass all the way around so that the mouse does not drip into the brownie layer. This only matters against the glass for presentation. Make all layers as level as possible, again for presentation. Repeat layers.
