this basic dough can be used to make many various kins of yeast breads, any shape of roll or loaf. Grandma gave us the basic recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 7 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbs. shortening

Step 1

Place dry yeast, sugar, salt and warm water in mixing bowl. Melt the shortening and make sure it is not too hot; add to bowl. add 1/2 the flour, mix, and add egg and then rest of flour

Let rise until double, punch down and either make into shapes or cover and store in refrigerator untill needed. After it is punched down, it may have to be kneaded if you are planning to shape it then. for loaf of bread, bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes To make monkey bread , divide dough into thirds. Roll with rolling pin, cut into diamond shapes and dip each piece into butter and stack in loaf pan in rows that are two deep. Let rise to double and bake as above. When top is brown, remove from oven and brush top with butter.
Better eaten hot
