  • 1 1/2 pounds jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 5 tablespoons dark sesame oil
  • 3 tablespoons rice wine
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce, sweet, Thai
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 slices ginger 1/4" thick
  • 2 scallions, sliced, green parts reserved for garnish

Step 1

Rinse the shrimp under cold water. Place the shrimp on paper towels to drain. Set aside while making the marinade.

Combine 3 tablespoons of the sesame oil with the rice wine, soy sauce, honey, sesame seeds, chili sauce and five spice powder in a large bowl and whisk to blend. Stir in the garlic, ginger, scallion whites and shrimp. Stir to coat. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator for 60 minutes.

Preheat the grill to high.

Using a slotted spoon, remove the shrimp from the marinade and toss with the remaining 2 tablespoons of the sesame oil.

Pour the remaining marinade into a sauce pan. Remove the garlic ginger and scallions with a slotted spoon. Bring the marinade to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook, uncovered, until the marinade becomes a thick syrupy glaze, 4-6 minutes.

Place the shrimp on the hot grill and cook, brushing with the reduced marinade until the shrimp are cooked through.

Transfer the shrimp to a large serving platter and serve immediately with your favorite rice or vegetables.
