- 3.75 cups (15.75 oz) all-purpose flour
- 2.25 cups (15.75 oz) sugar
- 1.5 teaspoon baking soda
- 1.5 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2.25 cups vegetable oil
- 1.5 cup buttermilk, room temperature
- 3 eggs, large
- 3 TABLESPOONS red food coloring
- 1.5 teaspoon white distilled vinegar
- 1.5 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation
Step 1
1. Wash and sanitize utensils and preparation area.
2. Assemble ingredients and equipment.
3. Position oven rack in center of oven; preheat oven to 350°; grease the bottom and sides of three 9-inch round cake pans; dust pans with flour and tap out excess.
4. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
5. In another large bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.
6. Using a standing mixer, mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined and a smooth batter is formed.
7. Divide the cake batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Place the pans in the oven evenly spaced apart. Bake 25-30 minutes until a pick comes out clean.
8. Cool cakes in pans on wire racks for 15 minutes; invert cakes onto the wire racks and let cool completely.
