Berliner Kranz Cookies

Grammie always made a variety of Christmas cookies. She had a little booklet with photos and recipes especially for Christmas....this is one of the favorites.

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter
- Granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. Grated orange rind
- 1 egg
- 2 cups sifted flour
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 1 egg white
- Green sugar
- Red cinnamon candies

Preparation
Step 1
Cream butter; add ½ cup sugar, orange rind, and egg; beat until light. Add flour and salt. Chill for several hours, or until firm enough to roll. Roll to ½ inch thickness. Cut with floured, 2 inch doughnut cutter. Put on cookie sheets. Beat egg white until foamy; add 2 tablespoons sugar gradually, and beat until stiff. Brush cookies with the mixture. Decorate cookies with green sugar and cinnamon candies. (They will look like wreathes.) Bake in hot oven, 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Do not let them turn brown. Remove to wire racks while hot.
