Ingredients

  • Frosting:
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 cup cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter flavor (opt)

Preparation

Step 1

Mix red food coloring with cocoa and set aside. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs to creamed pixture, one at a time, beating between additions. Beat in colored paste. Beat on med-hi for 2 minutes.
Add vanilla and buttermilk.
Sift flour and salt together 3 times and add to batter. Mix well. Fold in vinegar and soda by hand. Pour into 3 greased and floured 8" round pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until top springs back when lightly pressed. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.

Frosting:
Cook milk, flour and salt till thick, stirring constantly with whisk. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar well. Add flavorings. Add sugar mixture a little at a time for flour mixture and beat well.
