Ingredients
- 2 onion, chopped fine
- 1 celery rib, chopped fine
- 2 Tbs unsalted butter
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 Tbs minced fresh thyme or 1/4 tsp dry thyme
- Salt and Pepper
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 7 cups of water
- 1 lb. (2 cups) split peas, picked her, and rinsed
- 1 lb. ham steak, rind removed, quartered
- 1 (12oz) smoked ham hock, rinsed
- 2 bay leaves

Step 1
1. Microwave onions, celery, butter, garlic, thyme, 3/4 tsp salt, and pepper flakes in bowl, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened, about 5 minutes; transfer to slow cooker. Stir in water, peas, ham steak, ham hock, and bay leaves. Cover and cook until peas are tender, 8 to 10 hours on low or 5 to 7 hours on high.
2. Transfer ham steak to a cutting board, let cool slightly, there shred into bite-sized pieces using two forks. Discard ham hock and bay leaves.
3. Whisk soup vigorously until peas are broken down and soup thickens, about 30 seconds. Stir in ham and let sit until heated through, about 5 minutes Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve.
