Preparation
Step 1
Instructions
o 1
Mix together one part Plaster of Paris with one part water. For approximately eight cupcakes, mixing two cups of Plaster of Paris and two cups of water should be adequate. Mix together until a smooth texture with no lumps is formed. Mix in a small amount of acrylic paint to the mixture until the desired color is achieved. This color will be used for the cake part of the cupcake, so to attain a realistic cupcake, use colors like yellow or brown -- or leave the mixture white if you would like white cake cupcakes.
o 2
Place the cupcake liners into the cupcake pan. Slowly pour the cupcake "batter" into the cupcake liners. Fill the liners to the top. A spoon may be used to transfer the mixture to the cupcake liners. Allow the "batter" to set for about one hour at room temperature.
o 3
Mix one part Plaster of Paris and one part water again. This will be used for the frosting. Make a smaller batch this time, such as a 3/4 cup Plaster of Paris and a half cup of water. The frosting will need to be a bit thicker than the cupcake batter was, so for this reason, use a bit more Plaster of Paris than water. Again, mix in some acrylic paint and continue to mix until the desired color is achieved.
o 4
Take a spoonful of "frosting" and using a circular motion, top the cupcakes with frosting. Add a second spoonful to make a smaller circular motion around the first layer of frosting to achieve a slightly tiered frosting effect on the cupcake. This will achieve a homemade cupcake look. For a bakery style cupcake, place a bit of "frosting" into a baker's piping bag and slowly squeeze the bag while circling the frosting on top of the cupcake. Do this in a spiral effect to achieve the tiered frosting that is often seen in bakery-quality cupcakes. Allow your creations to dry at room temperature overnight.
