Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Preparation

Step 1

3/4 cup boiling water

Makes 3-4 dozen cookies

Pre-heat the oven to 350°F.

Blend in the molasses and egg.

Dissolve the baking soda in 3/4 cup boiling water and add to the mixture; add the vanilla.

Sift together the dry ingredients and add gradually, mixing well to make a soft dough.

Roll out to 1/2" thickness. A little more flour may be added, but just enough to make the dough easy to handle.

Cut the cookies and place on greased cookie sheets.
