  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt,divided

Step 1

Pour the oil into a heavy-bottomed 8 quart or larger pot and place over medium-high heat. Add the popcorn kernels. Once oil starts warming up (you'll see little bubbles forming around the kernels),add sugar and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir mixture with a wooden spoon,until just combined. Cover,leaving lid a tad open so steam can escape.
Wearing oven mitts,grab pot carefully and shake about.Return pot to heat. Once kernels start popping,lower the flame to medium and shake pot repeatedly,3 seconds of shaking the pot and 3 seconds of retuning the pot to the heat. Keep alternating and shaking. Once popping starts slowing down,remove from heat and immediately pour into a bowl. Sugar can burn very quickly,so you'd rather play it safe.
Add remaining salt and stir. store in an airtight container for up to a wk.
