Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 T. very warm water
  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 t. soda
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 T. sugar
  • 1 1/2 t. salt
  • 1 c. vegetable shortening
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • melted butter

Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl. Cutin shortening with a pastry blender. Add buttermilk and yeast mixture. Stir until thoroughly moistened. Turn dough out onto floured board and knead 1 or 2 minutes. No rising is required. Roll dough out to 1/2" thick and cut with a 2" biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheets, brush with melted butter and bake at 400 for 12-15 minutes or until lightly borowned. Dough will keep in refrigerator for several days.
