  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 heaping tsp. oregano

Step 1

The night before you cook the beans, rinse them and put them into a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water, leaving about 1 inch between the water level and the rim of the bowl. Soak beans overnight.

The following morning, drain off the soaking water, and rinse the beans well. Put in slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients, and add enough water to almost fill the cooker – leave about 2 inches between the water and the rim of the cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH all day (at least 8 hours). Remove bay leaf and serve. This is good with cornbread or cooked rice.
