Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa, divided
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups hot water

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Mix together flour, salt, 2 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder and 1/2 cup granulated sugar in 2-quart deep baking dish.

Combine milk, melted butter and vanilla. Mix into dry ingredients in baking dish, beating well by hand.

Combine remaining 3 tablespoons cocoa, remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar and brown sugar and sprinkle over cake batter. Pour hot water over all and place pan in oven.

Bake 30 to 40 minutes.
