Rich & Thick Pizza Sauce
By Addie
"This is a full-flavored rich pizza sauce that I have been making for over 20 years, the longer you simmer this sauce the thicker and richer it will be --- this sauce freezes very well and even tastes better if made a day ahead and left in the fridge overnight to blend flavors --- also see my Kittencal's No-Cook Pizza Sauce or Marinara Dipping Sauce" (by Kittencal's Kitchen)

Ingredients
- 3-4 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onions ( finely chopped)
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic (or use 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 3-4 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning (or to taste, I use 1 tablespoon)
- 2-4 teaspoons oregano
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes (You can use tomato sauce in place of crushed tomatoes or use a combination of both if desired)
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste; I use seasoned salt)
- Black pepper, to taste (optional)
- 1-2 teaspoon sugar (Add in only if needed at the end of cooking) (optional)
Details
Preparation
Step 1
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil; saute the onions, Italian seasoning and oregano for about 2-3 minutes, stirring until soft but not brown. Add in garlic and saute for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add in the tomato paste; stir and cook 1 minute.
Add in the remaining ingredients; cook and simmer on low heat for 1/2 to 3/4 hours, stirring occasionally, adding more salt if needed (the longer you cook this sauce the thicker and richer it will be!).
Cool slightly and use immediately or refrigerate up to 5 days or you may freeze.
NOTE:
Freeze in plastic containers after cooled, I find that this sauce tastes even better if left in the fridge overnight to blend the flavors before using or freezing. Delicious!

Oh Kittencal, how thankful I (and my family) am for you!! I tried this recipe since your recipes are usually fabulous and it was even better than that!!! I was so glad my crust was so thick so I could dip it in the sauce that was left over. My mother and FIL kept saying how delicious it was and asked if I could put it over spaghetti sometime! I have passed this on to several friends. I didn't change a thing, and why would I?!? THANK YOU again!!
Yum! I will NEVER use the canned/jarred stuff again! This stuff makes my pizza taste restaurant quality. Hubby ate a few pieces and then told me, "Ohhh ,this is the best." For him, that's quite a compliment! I added about 4 teaspoons of sugar and a teaspoon of salt at the end, it was great. Thanks!!!
I was really hoping for something more with this sauce. It was not what my taste buds were looking for. It was worth a try though since it had so many high reviews; however, I won't be making it again.
As Guy would say, "This is MONEY." When you put this recipe together you done it totally right. I had a craving for pizza last night didnt have one ingredient for it. But, didnt want to run all the way to town. Headed over to the Amish store minutes before they closed and found everything I needed. The only thing I didnt do was add sugar. Was sweet enough with the tomatoes I used. Thanks for sharing we all enjoyed it. Will never buy supermarket sauce again.
DELICIOUS!!!. I have yet to find a recipe from Kittencal that I haven't loved. I follow the recipe mostly but substituted one of the cans of diced tomatoes with tomato sauce and the diced tomatoes were the Italian style and so I adjusted my herbs. I did puree the tomatoes and wish that I had pureed the whole sauce at the end because I like a very smooth pizza sauce but the flavor was fantastic.
All I can say is WOW! This is such great pizza sauce! It's the first time I've ever made my own, and can only compare it to my favorite store bought brand, and this recipe is so much better! I followed the recipe exactly, using the highest amount of seasonings suggested. I also added one firmly packed teaspoon of dark brown sugar. I used my stick blender to make is smoother. I don't think I'll ever buy pizza sauce from the store again! Thank you Kittencal!
So good and easy to make! I also added fennel seed. Thanks for posting. Your recipes are always great!!
This was good but slightly too acidic for me. Served on top of a Chicago Style pizza.
I think this sauce is very good. I love pizza.......could eat it at least once a week. I've been making this for about 2 years now. Instead of freezing it, I make a double batch and can it in a water bath for 35 min (pints). That way when I want it, I don't have to defrost it. Just open a jar and put any leftovers in the frig.
Super delicious pizza sauce! Couldn't stop tasting it while it cooked! I halved the recipe and it was the perfect amount for a large pizza.
This sauce was excellent! It turned out thick and full of flavor. I added an extra clove of garlic, simmered the sauce with a bay leaf, and used two 14 oz cans of tomato sauce. I opted for a tablespoon each of Italian seasoning and oregano, yum! Oh, and I did add a teaspoon of sugar at the end. The recipe made lots, so I will freeze the rest for another day! Thank you for sharing!
Another great Kittencal recipe...thank you! Simple and fantastic!
I made a double batch of this last night and used for pizza today. It is so tasty! For us, there ended up being more sauce than needed, but I'm not complaining! Easy to make and great to eat! Thank you!!
Exactly the sauce I make but in a larger quantity. Easy and tasty. Can be used at any point, from just mixed together and barely cookes, to cooked for a long time. Good stuff.
I am going with 5 stars because this is darned good. I do think it needs a tiny bit more zip. Next time I may add some cayenne pepper (not much though) some grated romano cheese and something to be decided. Adults praised the sauce, kids said just OK. Personally I think with minor changes (more zip) this will be my go to pizza sauce.
Another great by kittencal!! I used Hunts salt free canned tomato paste, 1 can of Hunts salt free tomato sauce and 1 can Hunts salt free diced tomatoes with Oregano and Basil added. I didn't need the sugar in there either. My 5 year old daughter decided to use the food chopper and chop some portabella mushrooms and sweet red peppers fairly fine and add them too and it was great! As my daughter says..."Double thumbs up"
This was fantastic!
Wow! I am super hard to please when it comes to any tomato based sauce and even pickier when it comes to pizza sauce. This was awesome! I could not stop sneaking a taste as it was simmering on the stove. My search for the perfect pizza sauce is over and I can't wait to try it as a dip for bread sticks and garlic fingers!!
Fantastic pizza sauce! The full recipe makes quite a bit--enough for about 4 pizzas for us as we don't like just tons of sauce. But now I have 3 neatly packaged sauces waiting for us for a quick dinner! The sauce is thick and delicious. I did use one can of garlic and oregano tomatoes since I had it on hand. I wasn't sure whether to add the sugar at the end, but decided to add and little, and, after tasting again, think it's a good addition, cutting down on the acidity a bit. Also simmered for about an hour or so while the crust was going in the bread maker. Thanks for another great recipe, so much better than store bought and really not that much more difficult!
Great recipe! I make it, use for pizza and freeze in one pizza size containers in the freezer for whenever we throw together a homemade pizza. Didn't change a thing! Used with Kittencals Bacon Cheeseburger Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza. Yummy! Thanks as always Kittencal for another keeper recipe!
Awesome recipe, as usual! I made this sauce for the second time - it's great for the slow cooker! I quadrupled the recipe, cooking the onions, garlic, Italian seasoning, oregano, salt, pepper, and sugar on the stove. I cooked everything in a 6 qt slow cooker on high for about 5 hours. One thing that I didn't like as much the first time I made it (also in the slow cooker) was that it was just a little runny. This time, to thicken it up, I blended it up with my stick blender and it's perfect. It freezes well and also tastes great on pasta. You can't go wrong with this recipe - you'll never want to bring home store-bought again!
Excellent! Nothing more to say...
Excellent sauce! Easy to make and enough left to freeze for the next couple of times we need it. Thanks for sharing.
I liked this pizza sauce. I decided to try a different recipe from my original favorite. I simmered mine about an hour and a half long. Near the end of cooking I did add some more spices and sugar to it to fit my tastes. This make a rich and thick sauce. I used it in my calzones and it was perfect! I had some on the side to also dip in for extra. Great alternative from my original, thanks for the recipe!
Made this sauce a while ago and am just getting around to reviewing it. It's a great sauce with nice texture. I've made the really smooth sauces and this type that has bits and pieces in it. I like both....depends on what mood I'm in. I've definitely put this in my "keeper" file!!! Thanks for a yummy recipe.....I'll never buy the cans again at the store. I'll always make sure to have some of this in the freezer for those pizza cravings!!
We made this and used it right away. I added about a cup of leftover quartered grape tomatoes that I didn't know what to do with. It was thick and just chunky enough. I'm going to freeze the leftovers for next time.
We are having pizza tonight and I chose your recipe for our sauce. It made my house smell so good, while it was cooking. I couldn't quit dipping bread in while it was cooking. The pizza is in right now and I cant wait to eat!!! Thank you so much for another great recipe Kittencal!!!
This was a tasty sauce! The flavor was good and the texture was just right for us. Will make again. Thank you for sharing. I can always count on a recipe from you to taste good!
I love making typically store-bought products at home! I always buy pizza sauce at the grocery store, and then never use it all and throw it away. I love that I was able to freeze about half of this for another time. I was pretty conservative on the seasonings (which I'll correct next time), so that's the reason for 1 lost star. The kitchen smelled awesome making this too
Great recipe! Umm and next time I will remember to use crushed tomatoes rather than 'diced'.. don't know how I missed that one!! Had to try and mush them up with my spoon after cooking lol.(My blender was probably staring right at me, screaming "HELL-OOO!"). I went with the recommendation of adding tomato sauce, gave it a nice sweetness. Also threw in fresh chopped basil leaves + tiny bit of garlic powder (Not necessary, bit of a habit really. Very delicious!! Making more pizza tonight with leftover sauce!! Great Stuff!! Thanks for recipe.
As always, you never fail me! Iknew as soon as I saw your name, I was in for a treat and you did not disappoint! This sauce was fantastic and I have enough to freeze for next time. Thank you again!
Great recipe! It is also a forgiving recipe (thank goodness!). I made the mistake of buying diced tomatoes instead of crushed. I drained the diced tomatoes and added them, turned the rest of the tomato paste can into tomato sauce with water, and finished cooking the sauce. Then I threw it in the blender! It worked!
This was delicious! Only change was that I added a few fresh herbs. I will definitely make this again.
This was great, everyone loved it. I doubled the recipe and froze some to have on hand.
Kittencal's recipes are always awesome and this one delivers every time.
What more could you want in a pizza sauce! Make extra because you will love this! I needed sauce to go along with Recipe #75085 so I could make Pizza Subs. I put the ingredients in my crock pot along with my meatballs and let it cook on low for about 3-4 hours. Delicious! Thank you Kitt! :)
This sauce has a wonderful bold flavor! I will never again buy jarred sauce for pizza again. I made this exactly as stated and I had enough for 2 medium sized pizzas and froze the other half. This really took home made pizza to another level, thanks!!
Awesome sauce!
Awesome, Amazing, Astounding! This sauce is so wonderful that we've started trying to come up with new recipes to use it on. At this rate, I might need to triple or quadruple the recipe to last us through the week. Thank you!!!
We really love this sauce! Havn't tried it with the added sugar yet. So easy and so flavorful. Thanks for posting another great recipe!
