Preparation
Step 1
1. Mix together crisco, vanilla, sugar and eggs until very smooth.
2. Add flour a little at a time and mix well in between each addition. Keep adding flour and mixing until all the flour has been added. (Dough should feel somewhat smooth)
3. Tear several strips of waxed paper to be used to roll up the dough into. Tear off a piece of dough and roll out into thin strips (you can just roll with your hands into a line of dough).
4. Cut the strips of dough into lengths that can be rolled up in the waxed paper. Roll the strips of dough, cut and then roll in the waxed paper until all the dough has been used up.
5. Place all the rolls of waxed paper dough in the refrigerator OVERNIGHT.
6. Remove one or two strips of waxed paper from fridge at a time so the dough stays cold.
7. Unwrap the dough. Cut 1 inch pieces and press down with a fork to form the cookie shape and create the criss cross pattern on the dough.
8. Before baking you can put cut up cherries, colored sprinkles or chocolate sprinkles on the pressed cookie dough. You can place the cherry in the center of each cookie but it is easier for the sprinkles if you press the flattened cookie dough into a pile of the sprinkles (they stick better that way - i usually use a small flat plate to hold the sprinkles).
9. Bake cookies on a cookie sheet at 325 degrees - nanny always said to grease the cookie sheet but i don't know if you have to since the cookies are made with crisco!
10. They usually take about 10-12 minutes - check for brown edges. I always check sooner so we don't get the whole burning thing that nanny was famous for!!!
