Ingredients

  • 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate (2 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 / teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • Frosting

Step 1

Grease and flour 1 square pan, 8" x 8" x 2". Put chocolate in mixing bowl. Stir in boiling water, gradually until chocolate is melted. Cool. Sift together and add flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add shortening. Beat vigorously with spoon for 1 minutes or with electric mixer at medium speed for 1 minute. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add buttermilk, vanilla, and egg. Beat 1 more minute, scraping bowl. Pour into pan and bake 35 to 40 minutes in moderate oven (350 degrees). Cool and frost.
