DEAR HELOISE: My mom recently went into a nursing home, and here are some hints I have found useful:
• Arrange for lunch outside that you bring, or take food from the cafeteria.
• Post a schedule for who will be visiting when.
• Preprogram the phone with important numbers, and leave a list with large-size lettering.
• Bring old books to add to the nursing-home library.
• Visit with other residents who don't have family.
• Label all clothing, and take pictures and inventory twice a month.
• Send a postcard when you can't visit.
• Make a list of family, with pictures to go with names.
