Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/4 cups milk

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350. Grease tow 8-inch or 9-inch round layer cake pans. Line bottoms with waxed paper or dust with flour.

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, slat and cocoa. Cream shortening. Beat in sugar. Blend in eggs and vanilla, beating until light and fluffy. Add sifted dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with milk, making 3 dry and 2 liquid additions.

Turn into prepared pan. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool 5 minutes, then remove from pans.
