Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (15-oz.) can low sodium tomato sauce
  • 3 ounces low sodium tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke hickory flavoring, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns, split and lightly toasted

Preparation

Step 1

In a large skillet, cook ground turkey and onion over medium-high heat, stirring often, until turkey is lightly browned and crumbly, 6 to 8 minutes; drain off excess liquid and place in a slow cooker. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, 2 1/2 teaspoons of liquid smoke, seasoned salt and pepper. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours. Stir in the remaining liquid smoke. Serve on burger buns.

SERVING SUGGESTION: Corn on the cob and a big bowl of coleslaw (use a ready-made mix and toss with low fat mayo and a little rice vinegar).
GLUTEN FREE: Make sure tomato sauce, tomato paste, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke are gluten free. Use gluten free hamburger buns.
