Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding

Ingredients
- 5 1/2 cups milk, divided
- 3 cups day old bread cubes
- 5 large eggs, divided
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 firmly packed dark brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour

Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.
Heat 4 cups milk in a medium saucepan just until bubbles form around edge of pan, about 7 minutes.
Combine warm milk and bread cubes in a medium bowl. Let stand until cool.
Whisk 3 eggs in a medium bowl. Stir in granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. Add bread cube mixture and mix well. Stir in butter and vanilla extract.
Spoon bread mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake until set and lightly browned, about 1 hour.
For sauce, combine brown sugar and flour in a medium saucepan. Stir in remaining milk and remaining eggs. Cook over low heat, stirring continually, until thickened. Drizzle over bread pudding in dessert bowls.

Grandma's Secret
Grandma had a use for everything. She liked to save the heels of bread in a plastic bag in the freezer until she had enough to make this pudding. She would let the bread thaw and then tear it into pieces.
