Ingredients

  • Optional ingredients:
  • 3 c flour
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 12-oz can beer, room temperature
  • 1/4 c butter, melted (for topping)
  • SWEET-
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp sugar or vanilla sugar
  • 1 c raisins
  • or
  • SAVORY-
  • 1 Tbsp italian herb mix (or Penzey's tuscan sunset or pasta sprinkle)
  • 1/4 tsp minced garlic
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees for metal loaf pan (or 350 degrees for glass). In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt and stir to mix. Make a well in the center. Pour the beer in the well and then mix thoroughly. Bake as is, or add the optional ingredients of your choice for a sweet raisin bread or a savory herb bread. (If making savory, mix the spices and salt with the olive oil before adding.) Pour the batter into a lightly greased loaf pan. Pour the melted butter over the top. Bake for 45-55 minutes. Let cool before slicing.
