Preparation

Step 1

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.

2. Stir together graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter in a bowl until moistened. Press mixture into bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan. Bake until edges are lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

3. Stir together condensed milk, flaked coconut, and shredded coconut in a bowl, then spread gently over crust. Bake until slightly puffed and light brown around edges, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

4. Meanwhile, melt chocolate in a metal bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring until smooth.

5. Spread chocolate evenly over coconut. Let cool about 1 hour, then chill until chocolate is set, about 30 minutes. Cut into 36 (1 1/4-inch) bars with a sharp, heavy knife.

[From our kitchen: Bars can be made 1 week ahead and chilled, layered between wax paper in an airtight container.]
