Ingredients
- 15 gal. rain water
- 6 can Lewis Lye
- 15 lbs. meat scraps or old lard or bacon grease
- Water

Step 1
Build fire under butcher kettle. Add water. Heat until very hot. Stir lye until melted; the meat scraps are added to hot water in a flour sack. The fire was kept burning all day, stirring with a wooden paddle when it thickened. The bag was removed. Pour out soap and cool overnight. Cut into bars; put on boards to dry.
