Preparation

Step 1

Version 1:
In a medium bowl, mix together the milk, flour, egg, baking power and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Stir until smooth.
Place the remaining sugar and cinnamon on a plate; stir to combine.
Heat 1 inch of oil in a pot to 350 degrees F.
Dip each apple slice into the batter, then add to the pot of oil. Cook 4-5 apple slices at a time for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.
Remove the apples from the oil and immediately roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Repeat the process with the remaining apples.
Serve your apple fries immediately with caramel sauce.

Version 2:
Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep frying pot over medium high heat.
Core and peel apples. Slice apples into pieces about the shape and size of french fries. Keeping the apple pieces about the same size ensures that they cook evenly. Toss the apple pieces in the cornstarch until well coated.
In a separate bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar, then set aside.
In small batches, fry the apples for 2-3 minutes until very lightly golden. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and drain apple fries on a brown paper bag or several paper towels. Sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar mixture after they have drained for a minute or two.
Keep frying in small batches until all the apples are cooked. Serve immediately.

Version 3:
In a fry pan, or deep fryer heat vegetable oil for frying.
Mix together the buttermilk and sugar in a medium size bowl. Peel and slice apples and add them to the buttermilk mixture as you go to prevent browning.
In a shallow dish, put a layer of wonder flour. Pull the apples out of the buttermilk mix, one at a time and lightly coat all sides in the flour.
When oil is nice and hot, gently place coated apples into the oil so they are not touching, when the bottom side begins to turn golden, flip over and brown the second side. Quickly remove to a tray lined with paper towels to soak up excess grease and cool. Sprinkle immediately with cinnamon and sugar while they are hot.
For the dip:
Mix together the the cream cheese and cool whip until completely blended then stir in the caramel sauce. Place into a bowl for dipping and drizzle a little extra caramel sauce over the top.
